Blog Entry #9 Media Madness

I have begun to notice different changes in the media over time. The differences in the way it's used, and the ways it's not used. Social media has become a place of much influence and power in our world today. Social media has become the number one place for networking in our society, reaching past just our community, but all over the world. When I was first introduced to social media, it was a way to interact with friends at school and get new ideas from others, at least in the country. Now that's all changed. That's why my essay delves into the benefits of Pinterest, because it takes me back to that place when social media wasn't such a tremendous part of my life. Media acted more as a useful resource then, than it does now. Social media has spread to so many in our world today. According to DataReportal, a social media statistics website, "over 5.5 billion people in our world today use social media."(DataReportal) I have analyzed that this rate of usage has caused a social media hunger games for who can get the most likes, more money, and more fame.

Although I have analyzed the large amount of money social media gains from our constant viewing of it, it has now turned into engagement. With paid content creators and algorithm-delegated ads, social media can not only promote businesses but is a huge business itself. The behaviors that I have noticed come from this business model of media platform are many. Now, viral famous stars can become millionaires overnight, causing competition frenzy among the platforms for this fame and recognition. Behaviors like doing the vilest or embarrassingly hilarious to the making of extreme content made to promote oneself, no matter the cost. When I am on social media, I am always diligent in case a weird hacking video shows up on my phone or a gruesome sighting in the news pops up on my feed. The changes are constant and in my opinion are negative changes, but on the other hand, social media has changed for the better when not so gruesome or too much of a distraction. Many of its videos and posts have often inspired me. I do appreciate how Ai can show more videos and content that you like and gear content toward your liking.

This graph shows the combined amount users are making off of content creation.

The media has exploited those who crave validation from others and profited from the desperation we see in others who use it for gain. The media has also been used for manipulation and has left many distracted by "doomscrolling." These are the main changes I have seen the media make, including to me. Taking a couple days to eliminate all media, including movies and tv shows, has freed me from the doomscrolling. When globs of so much information are thrown at me I don't have energy to learn anything else. I used to fall into that desperation, as I said earlier to compete with social media. The social media detox help you feel the comparison bug arise. I don't think that younger me would have ever imagined the money-making machine of social media's effects on our comparing of each other and influence. For now, I will take the good and leave the bad when it comes to social media
